The Vision
About
Hi, I’m Rachel, and I’m the person behind The Deadwives Club.
I’ve worked across wellbeing and creativity for years, and I’ve recently finished my degree in Creative Therapeutic Practice.
I’ve always been creative. I’ve always made things and, technically, I suppose I’ve always been an artist too, although I still struggle with actually calling myself one.
And then there are books.
Books have always been personal for me. Reading is somewhere I can disappear into. It gives me a way to switch everything else off, get out of my own head for a while and be completely somewhere else.
So… why The Deadwives Club?
This is probably my favourite bit.
When I’m reading, I don’t pay much attention to anything else. I hyperfocus completely. I’m in the book. I don’t particularly want to talk and, apparently, I can get quite annoyed when somebody interrupts me.
One day, my husband said that when I’m like that, it’s basically like living with a dead wife.
There was a bit of banter backwards and forwards between us, but for some reason that phrase stuck in my head. And somewhere along the way, I said it:
The Deadwives Club.
That was it. I couldn’t get rid of it.
Because there must be loads of us. The women who disappear into books. The “I’ll just read one more chapter” women who suddenly realise it’s 2am.
The women with an audiobook playing in the car, at the gym, walking the dog, doing the housework — or basically anywhere nobody can stop them.
Those are the Deadwives. 🖤
Why turn it into an actual club?
Because I wanted to bring together the things I genuinely love: books, audiobooks, creativity, making things, escapism — and other people who get it.
My background in creative therapeutic practice and wellbeing has taught me a lot about how important creativity, connection and having time away from everyday life can be. But I didn’t want to create something that felt like therapy.
And I definitely didn’t want a traditional book club where everyone sits around seriously analysing chapter seven either.
I wanted to create something I’d actually want to go to.
Somewhere you can walk in, put your headphones on, pick up something creative and disappear into a really good audiobook for a while. Then come up for air, have a drink, chat, laugh and meet other people who completely understand why you’ve just spent the last hour ignoring them.
And yes, the books matter.
I like books that make me feel something. I love banter that genuinely makes me laugh. I want tension, chemistry, yearning and characters I become far too emotionally invested in.
And who doesn’t like a little bit of spicy smut?
Give me a great duet narration and I’m happy.
